Pay-Monthly with Handset (Indicative)

Pay-monthly prices include a handset subsidy spread over the contract term. The effective handset cost is the difference between the total pay-monthly cost and the equivalent SIM-only cost over the same period.

Total Cost of Ownership

When comparing plans, always calculate the total cost over the full contract term, not just the monthly price. Include: upfront costs, monthly fees × contract months, and any add-ons you plan to use.

Example calculation: A 24-month pay-monthly plan at £35/month with £50 upfront = £35 × 24 + £50 = £890 total. The equivalent SIM-only plan at £15/month = £15 × 24 = £360. The implicit handset cost is £890 − £360 = £530.

Price Increase Impact

Vodafone applies annual mid-contract price increases, typically CPI + 3.9%. At 4% CPI, this means a 7.9% increase. On a £30/month plan, this adds approximately £2.37/month after year one. Over a 24-month contract, this adds approximately £14.22 to the total cost. See our CPI glossary entry for more detail.

Value Assessment

Based on community feedback, Vodafone's SIM-only plans offer competitive value, particularly the 12-month options. Pay-monthly plans with handsets are typically more expensive than buying a handset outright and taking a SIM-only plan, but the convenience of a single monthly payment and the ability to spread the handset cost appeals to many customers. Broadband pricing is competitive for fibre plans but standard ADSL is poor value given the limited speeds available.
